Tom Cruise is an American award-winning actor and film producer, originally known as Thomas Cruise Mapother. Consistently, he is regarded as one of Hollywood’s icons in terms of his films grossing over $4 billion in North America and over $11.5 billion worldwide. He has received various awards, including three Golden Globe Awards, an Honorary Palme d’Or, and nominations for four Academy Awards.

Tom’s school life has had many challenges; however, he managed to overcome them all and became one of the most famous actors in Hollywood.  He attended 15 schools in total. In fourth grade, he first became involved in drama under drama teacher George Steinburg. Together with six other boys, they put on an improvised play to music called IT at the Carleton Elementary School drama festival. Val Wright, who was present in the audience, commented on the play, citing it as excellent. In sixth grade, Cruise briefly took a Catholic church scholarship at St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati.

His ambition was to become a Franciscan priest, but unfortunately, his family relocated again. Rumors from his former classmate were that they both asked to leave after getting caught taking liquor. Tom played football in his senior year of high school for the varsity team as a linebacker. Again, he was caught drinking beer before a game and was cut from the squad. Later, he went on to become a star in the school’s production of Guys and Dolls. In 1980, Cruise graduated from Glen Ridge High School.

Tom started his acting career at age 18 with the blessings of his mother and stepfather in New York City as a busboy. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to look for television roles. CAA (Creative Artists Agency) was his first sign-up. His first debut was in 1981, in the film Endless Love, where he appeared in a bit of a role. In that same year, he landed a major supporting role as a crazed military academy student in Taps. The career-makers for Cruise were the films “All the Right Moves” and “Risky Business,” which were described as Generation X classics. In 1986, his status as a successful superstar was cemented in the film Top Gun. He later starred in Cocktail in 1988; this was a box office success but failed with the critics. However, his performance earned him a nomination for the Razzie Award for Worst Actor that year.

Additionally, he starred in Barry Levinson’s Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman, who won the Academy Award for Best Film and the Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1989, the film war epic “Born on the Fourth of July” earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, the People’s Choice Award, the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor for Favorite Motion Picture Actor, Cruise’s first Best Actor Academy Award nomination, and a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. His recent films include Top Gun (2022), Maverick, where a team of pilots carries out a mission to destroy an unsanctioned nuclear facility (2017), The Mummy and Mission Impossible (2018), Fallout (2016), Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2015), Mission Impossible (2015), Rogue Nation (2014), and Edge of Tomorrow (2014).

Tom is the son of Thomas Cruise Mapother III and Mary Lee Pfeiffer. His father worked as an electrical engineer, while his mother worked as a special education teacher. Cruise’s parents were both from Louisville, Kentucky. His mother was of Irish and English roots, while his father was of German descent His three sisters include Cass, Marian, and Lee Anne.
