Kurt’s first debut in his career was when he was 12 years old in the series ” The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters from 1963 to 1964.  Beginning in 1966, the Walt Disney Company signed him to a ten-year contract where he starred as Dexter Riley. During the 1970s, he became the studio’s top star. In his role as Mike Nicholas Silkwood in 1983, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. He very well portrayed rock and roll superstar Elvis Presley in Elvis, which was in 1979; through this, he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

As a child, Russell played little league baseball throughout his grade school years and also on his high school baseball team as a second baseman. He was injured while playing baseball for the independent Portland Mavericks. This injury forced his retirement from baseball in 1973 and led to his return to acting.
