Darby Bybee Career

Bybee moved from KARK-TV in Little Rock, where he was certified by the American Meteorological Society, to 40/29 News in November 2012. In June 2015, Bybee was promoted to Chief Meteorologist. He provides weather predictions on 40/29 News weekdays at 5:00, 6:00, and 10:00 p.m. on ABC, in addition to The Arkansas CW at 9 p.m. As he feels he belongs between the Plains and the Ozarks, Bybee finds satisfaction in forecasting the weather for Northwest Arkansas and The River Valley.

Bybee has traveled across eighteen states and over fifty thousand kilometers storm-chasing in the last ten years. He claims that “severe weather is my specialty,” which is understandable. Bybee, who is from Freedom, Indiana, developed an early interest in weather and went on to receive a meteorology degree from Ball State University and his first internship with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. He and their classmates chased strong storms in the Midwest during his undergraduate years.

Bybee began his meteorological career in Lincoln, Nebraska at KLKN, where he reported several days a week and made weekend weather forecasts after interning at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. He gained a great deal of weather information over his three years in the central plains, including in-depth reporting on extreme weather occurrences. Bybee took a job in 2011 as a weekend meteorologist at KARK-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas, and spent more than a year honing his forecasting abilities there. He says of the chance presented by 40/29, “It was a no-brainer.” In addition to his love of storm-chasing and climbing, Bybee is a loyal dog owner.
