Since joining WCCO, Mayerle has been a member of the 10 o’clock news team, which won a regional Murrow award for their coverage of Jacob Wetterling’s case and the capture of Danny Heinrich, his kidnapper and killer. Her reports aided in the passage of The Return to Play Act, a statute protecting young athletes, by Georgia politicians.

For her coverage of Ann Bartlett, who perished in a home fire in 2016 as a result of firefighters’ inadequate response to Bartlett’s 911 call, Jennifer discovered that Mayerle had won an Emmy, a Murrow, and a Georgia Associated Press award.

She did, however, sabotage a probe into fake smoke alarms that the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department had bought and given to low-income citizens, a move that ultimately saved most lives. An FBI investigation into the distributor was sparked by the widely reported set of reports, which also compelled the department to recall and start replacing over 18,000 defective detectors. A family of six was spared from a house fire that would have destroyed it by the alert from one of the replacement detectors.
