Phil began his career in Atlanta with CNN in the production process after graduation. He made a friend with future MSNBC presenter Keith Olbermann while he was a sportscaster at CNN. Griffin started working at NBC in 1983 as a replacement producer for The Today Show’s absent producers after spending several years at CNN, where he mostly worked as a writer-producer-editor in their sports department. Griffin persuaded the executive producer of The Today Show to take him on staff six months later.

He started working as a producer for USA Today: The Television Show in 1987. He later went back to The Today Show once it was discontinued. Griffin held a number of positions at NBC, including senior broadcast producer for the Tom Brokaw-hosted NBC Nightly News. He oversaw the coverage of the O. J. Simpson trial on NBC News.
