After he had left Cuba, Hegseth gathered an infantry platoon leader in Baghdad and a civil-military operations officer in Samarra. Presently, he is serving in the Individual Ready Reserve. Hegseth went back to active duty as a captain in 2012 after he was given a transfer to Afghanistan with the Minnesota Army National Guard.
