After receiving a promotion she earned the position of the White House correspondent during the Clinton Administration. She first joined NPR as a general assignment reporter and newscaster in 1985. For one year she took a leave from work to attend Columbia University in New York as a recipient of a Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism.

Previously before working at NPR, Liasson worked as a freelance for both radio and television reporters in San Francisco.
