He went to Parris Island, South Carolina, where he underwent thorough training. Johnny and his group were deployed in Iraq after five years of training as bomb technicians.

In August 2010, the Marine Corps group of bomb technicians including Jones, Sergent Eric Chir, and Corporal Daniel Greer, were tasked with the duty to eradicate all the underground planted bombs and materials which were used to make bombs in what seems like a deserted village. They disangage more than 50 planted IED boms.

His hospitalization was a painful experience, considering the continuous pain, endless surgeries, and emotional struggle. The end result of that long struggle is worth celebrating. He comes out as a winner through support from both family and friends. After finishing his treatment, his legs were replaced with permanent prosthetic legs. It was hard getting used to them but through rehabilitation and physical therapy, he finally managed.

Jones stole the limelight for himself when President Barack Obama invited him to the White House to talk about setbacks facing active duty and retired service corps in 2012.
