Although Gregory was born in New York, as a teenager, his family relocated to San Diego. He claims that he fell in love with Southern California right away and has tried to stay in the area as much as possible throughout his professional life. He studied political science at San Diego State University, where he also received his degree.

Gregory was hired by KYMA in Yuma, Arizona, where he produced, shot, and edited his own stories in addition to acting as an anchor. Later, he started working as a reporter and weekend anchor for KTNV in Las Vegas, Nevada. Before joining ABC7, he also spent seven years working as a reporter at KNSD in San Diego.

Gregory covered the Democratic National Convention in 2000 as an ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter. He covered live coverage of the Supreme Court’s consideration of the court cases resulting from the election results during the contentious election that followed from Washington, D.C.

Following the terrorist events of September 11, 2001, Gregory accompanied the California National Defense soldiers deployed to the Middle East to defend and secure American military installations. He received an Emmy in 1995 for covering the Tank Rampage in San Diego and another in 1996 for covering the San Diego wildfires in Harmony Grove.
