She began working for the Ten Network as a substitute presenter and television news reporter in 1997. Gardner came to the Seven Network in 1998 to work as a reporter and host of the late-night news. She later joined Mark Beretta as co-host of Seven News Sunrise, which she ran from 2000 to 2002. Before working as a stand-in presenter for Seven News and Sky News Australia, she held this post for two years. She later co-hosted the network’s Sunrise early morning show for two years.
Gardner was the first presenter of National Nine News Afternoon Edition, a semi-national news bulletin that the Nine Network added in 2004 and airs at 4:30 p.m. Leila McKinnon was replaced as the host of the National Nine News Morning Edition by Gardner in 2006. When Sharyn Ghidella quit and moved to the Seven Network to broadcast Seven News in Brisbane, she took over as Today’s newscaster in December 2006.

On Monday, August 6, 2007, Allison Langdon took over as the on-air personality for Today after Gardner took a six-month maternity leave.
