Pickens played football at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama. He had 69 receptions for 1,368 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. Pickens also played in the 2019 Under Armour All-American Game. As a five-star recruit, he initially committed to Auburn University to play college football prior to changing his commitment to the University of Georgia.

George received instant playing time his freshman year at Georgia in 2019, leading the team with 49 receptions, 727 receiving yards, and 8 receiving touchdowns. In the next season, he caught 36 passes for 513 yards and a team-leading 6 touchdowns in an 8-game season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
