CBS2-WBBM-TV Background

American television station CBS2-WBBM-TV is located in Chicago, Illinois. It broadcasts shows from the CBS network. The station’s transmitter is perched atop the Willis Tower, and it is owned and run by the network’s CBS News and Stations division. It has studios on West Washington Street in the Loop district and its transmitter is housed in the station.

The only “full-power” TV station in Chicago right now running a digital broadcast on the VHF band is WBBM-TV. In order to improve reception, its competitor, WLS-TV, was the only other station to operate its full-power digital signal on a VHF allocation until it moved its digital broadcasts to UHF channel 44. However, when it launched on October 31, 2009, it kept VHF channel 7 as the allotment for its digital fill-in translator. After the switchover on June 12, some viewers had problems receiving VHF broadcasts; as a result, WBBM’s newscasts were rebroadcast over WWME-CA (channel 23), which afterward served as a low-power analog nightlight service on its analog signal.

On April 21, 2020, the station introduced CBSN Chicago, which is now CBS News Chicago, a streaming news service, as part of a rollout of such services throughout the CBS-owned stations. The COVID-19 pandemic’s effects caused a delay in the service’s introduction, which was originally scheduled to happen by the end of March 2020. For the report “Unwarranted,” a 2019 examination of failed police raids in Chicago and the effects they had on people and their homes, WBBM-TV was recognized with a Peabody Award in June 2020.
