Farrow joined the Obama administration in 2009 as Special Adviser for Humanitarian and Non-Governmental Organization Affairs in the Office of the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Additionally, Farrow was part of a team assembled by Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, with whom he had previously worked as a speechwriter. He was also in charge of “overseeing the U.S. Government’s relationships with civil society and nongovernmental actors” in Afghanistan and Pakistan for the following two years. Later he was named Special Adviser for Global Youth Issues and Director of the State Department’s Office of Global Youth Issues by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2011. The office was established as a result of Clinton’s appointment of a multi-year task committee to study the United States’ economic and social policies affecting adolescents.
He has published essays, op-eds, and other items for publications such as The Guardian, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, and others. Farrow’s book, Pandora’s Box: How American Military Aid Creates America’s Enemies, was acquired by Penguin Press in October 2013 and was published in 2015. Farrow hosted the “Undercover with Ronan Farrow” investigative section on NBC’s Today, In June 2015.
