On June 9, 2016, he went professional and fought in his debut match as a professional. In a fight in Tijuana, he defeated Edgar Meza via technical knockout. In November 2016, he soon joined Golden Boy Promotions. Garcia made his professional debut in the Smith-Hopkins light-weight main event at The Forum on December 17, 2016, according to Oscar De La Hoya. He ultimately prevailed via knockout in the second round. In September 2019, he renewed his agreement with Golden Boy Promotions with a new five-year agreement.

Ryan Garcia Canceled bouts and Fortuna and Diaz

On April 13, 2021, DAZN made the announcement that Garcia would defend his recently obtained WBC interim lightweight championship. Devin Haney, a former WBA (Regular) super featherweight champion from the Dominican Republic. Garcia, however, revealed on April 24 that he has dropped out of the fight in order to “manage his health and well-being”. In order to replace Garcia and take against Fortuna on July 9, Joseph Diaz, a former IBF super featherweight champion, decided to switch to the lightweight division.

Garcia’s recently won WBC interim lightweight title was thus subsequently withdrawn from him, and Diaz and Fortuna now have that title. On October 8, 2021, it was revealed that Garcia would face Joseph Diaz on November 27 in Los Angeles. for his interim lightweight championship with the WBC after Diaz defeated Fortuna. On October 15, 2021, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported that Garcia’s bout with Diaz would be postponed due to a hand injury.
