Later Stefanovic confirmed his separation with Cassandra Thorburn in September 2016 and the couples officially divorced in October 2017 after being in marriage for 21 years. Stefanovic began his early education at Anglican Church Grammar School. He later joined St Augustine’s College. After finishing college he joined the University of Technology of Queensland and that’s where he managed to graduate with a journalism degree.

Stefanovic began his career in Rockhampton and Cairns for WIN as a cadet reporter in 1994. Later on, he got a position with TVNZ in New Zealand for One Network News as a reporter in 1996. In 1998, Karl went back to Australia with a reporting and presenting job in Brisbane for Ten News as well as a Ron Wilson news presenter in Sydney. He later went on to report and present News on Nine Network. During his presentation on Nine Network, he covered Childers backpacker hostel in a fire in 2000 and, the Warragamba bushfires from Sussex Inlet which he reported in 2001 which led to his appointment to the Nines Sydney newsroom in January 2002 He also covered Canberra bushfires in 2003.
Karl who has been a fill-in host on A Current Affair for Tracy Grimshaw was announced to replace Steve Liebmann of Today host in February 2005. In Nine Network, he participated in the Torvilland Dean Dancing on Ice television show in 2006. He went back again for the show but was defeated by Jack Wall in a viewer poll. In 2008 Karl and Lisa Wilkinson were appointed to replace a Nine Network long-time host Ray Martin. He left Carl Candle Light where he hosted until 2012 when his position was taken over by David Campbell.

Lately, Nine Network announced that Stefanovic was going back to today as a co-host alongside Allison Langdon 60 minutes reporter and weekend today in January 2020, and in June 2020, He celebrated his 20 work experiences with Nine Network. Karl was to become a regular contributor on 2GB according to the announcement in June 2019.
