After graduating from college, he worked as a “middle man” and apprentice animator at Walt Disney Studios on movies including Pete’s Dragon and The Small One. He later advanced to full-fledged animator status while working with Glen Keane on The Fox and the Hound. He worked with and got to know people like Andy Gaskill, Brad Bird, Bill Kroyer, Dan Haskett, Ed Gombert, John Musker, Jorgen Klubien, Rick Heinrichs, Sue, and Tim Burton during his tenure at Disney. Later, he collaborated with the latter on the movies James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas. A year later, Henry claimed that Disney great Eric Larson had taught him a lot that would help him become a better storyteller, animator, and artist.

Henry Selick Coraline (2009)

His debut film with Laika was Coraline, which was released in 2009 and was based on Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed book of the same name. This became the first stop-motion stereoscopic animated movie. Additionally, the movie earned mostly favorable reviews from critics. In addition, Coraline received nominations for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Golden Globes.

In 2009, he left Laika. And in 2010, he joined Pixar and The Walt Disney Company in a long-term contract to exclusively produce stop-motion films. This not only returned Henry to his original roots but also reunited Henry with numerous former friends and co-animators. On October 4, 013, he and Cinderbiter’s first film under this deal, a project called, ShadeMaker was set to be released. In 2011, the film was green-lit for production and retitled, The Shadow King. It was reported in August 2012, that after spending a reported $50 million, Walt Disney Pictures canceled the project.

This was due to ” a creative and scheduling standpoint. Moreover, it was announced on April 28, 2012, that Disney had optioned the rights for Neil Gaiman’s novel, The Graveyard Book. Later the same day, it was announced that he would direct the film after work was completed on ShadeMaker. In January 2013, it was announced that Ron Howard would direct the film. It was reported in February 2013, in a press release by Henry that K5 International would be handling sales at the European Film Market. Henry then announced on October 16, 2013, a live-action film adaptation of Adam Gidwitz’s children’s novel A Tale Dark and Grimm.

On November 3, 2015, it was mentioned that Henry was creating Wendell& Wild. Based on a novel by Henry, this new stop-motion film stars Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key. Netflix decided to stream the movie in 2018. The movie will also be available on Netflix on October 28, 2022. In June 2017, it was announced that Henry would be in charge of directing the premiere and following episodes of the Russo brothers’ Little Nightmares TV adaptation.
