Leila McKinnon started her vocation part-time for The Sunday Transmit in Brisbane. She acknowledged a cadetship at WIN TV in 1993
in Rockhampton, Queensland, before transiting to WIN’s Cairns department. Her work began by working with the Nine Network, reporting and presenting for Nine Gold Coast News. Three years later, through her hard work, she became a reporter for A Current Affair in Brisbane. She replaced Sharyn Ghidella and was appointed news presenter for Today, holding the position until Ghidella was reinstated as news presenter. Since her return from Australia in 2007, she has presented the summer edition of A Current Affair.

Her interrogation of Corey Worthington in 2008 made her famous. McKinnon co-hosted Weekend Today alongside Cameron Williams, with Amber Sherlock and Michael Slater presenting the news and sports. The program was introduced to counteract Seven’s Weekend Sunrise. Later, the show extended to Saturday mornings, where it was broadcast from Victoria after Black Saturday, Australia’s mostly deadly bushfires. She co-hosted the Sydney New Year’s Eve telecast alongside Cameron Williams. In 2012, she co-hosted Nine’s award-winning coverage of the London Olympic Games and conducted the first live interview with Princes William and Harry.

In 2011 and 2012, McKinnon wrote a weekly rugby league column for NRL.com. Also, she is the editor of Australia’s Favorite Recipes (2012), a cookbook that raises money for the charity Legacy and features the family recipes of ordinary Australians. With her resignation in 2014 from Weekend Today to spend time with her family and focus on other projects on the Nine Network, she was replaced by Deborah Knight. Leila hosted The Way It Was, a podcast that dissected the weekly news cycle and teamed up with Nine News journalists. In 2022, McKinnon, alongside Jim Courier and sideline presenters Will & Woody, was announced as one of the new hosts for the sixth season of Australian Ninja Warrior.
