Ellie Simmonds Career
At the Summer Paralympics in Beijing in 2008, she was the youngest competitor from the United Kingdom at the age of 13. She was competing in the 50m butterfly, 100m, and 400m freestyle, as well as the 200m Individual Medley, at that location. She went on to win gold medals in the 100- and 400-meter freestyle events as a result of her outstanding performance. Then, on September 1, 2012, she duplicated her gold-winning effort from the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, shattering the previous record by five seconds. She broke the World Record she had achieved in the qualifying round the day before when she won gold in the 200m, Individual Medley, two days later, on the evening of September 3.
She successfully defended her 200-meter individual medley gold medal at the Rio Paralympics on September 12, 2016, setting a new world record and the first time in under three minutes. Also during the 2016 Summer Paralympics, she took home a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle. She has also won eight gold World Championship medals. She competes in the S6 disability category for swimming. After failing to win a medal at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2020, Ellie declared her retirement from the Paralympics on September 2, 2021. She will take part in the 20th season of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One, which was confirmed on August 7, 2022.
